Bowling Glossary
Understanding bowling terminology makes your visit to Bowlero, AMF Bowling, Lucky Strike, Round1, Stars & Strikes, Splitsville, Bowlmor Lanes or Pinstack more enjoyable and helps you follow the scoring displayed on lane screens. A strike knocks down all ten pins with your first ball — marked with an X on the scorecard. A spare clears the remaining pins with your second ball in a frame, marked with a forward slash. A turkey is three consecutive strikes. A Brooklyn occurs when the ball crosses to the opposite pocket — a right-handed bowler hitting the left side of the head pin. A split leaves a gap between standing pins that is difficult to convert. The gutter runs along both sides of the lane — bumper bowling at venues like Bowlero and Stars & Strikes raises barriers to prevent gutter balls. A perfect game scores 300 points from twelve consecutive strikes. Modern electronic scoring at all major US chains calculates these automatically.
